Ex Libris does more than go behind the scenes of one of the world’s greatest knowledge institutions. It shows its role as a center of community and an exemplar of morality, accessibility, democracy and calm – even as it welcomes diverse people and ideas. By Frederick Wiseman, the great master of quietly, closely and profoundly observed documentary filmmaking. With appearances by Patti Smith, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Elvis Costello and many more.

***** “Ex Libris rolls out like a collection of short films. If you aren’t that into this special event (maybe you just don’t dig slam poetry or watching kids build robots) sit tight because in a few minutes we’re moving on. It’s like watching Wiseman skip along through the stacks of all accumulated human knowledge. More than any other civic institution, this library is a place for the betterment of everyone in every conceivable way, and if this ends up being Frederick Wiseman’s last film I can think of no better swan song.” ―The Guardian (London)
